Ever wanted to say you’ve read ALL of Shakespeare’s plays? Beginning July 7th, The Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare Allowed! series kicks off for the 4th time with Henry VI, Part 1, and will continue on the first Saturday of every month at the main branch of The Nashville Public Library for the next 3 years – until all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays have been read out loud.

The Library, also co-sponsor of the monthly program, will host a kick-off party at 11 am with drinks and snacks just before the reading starts at noon. This event is always free and open to the public.

“Shakespeare Allowed is a wonderful adventure. Though the group varies greatly in backgrounds and ages, we enjoy our time together as we experience each play,“ says Susan Hollyday, participant and NSF Board Member.

For the first time, Shakespeare Allowed! will also be in Rutherford County. Led by Kevin Compton, local actor and Shakespeare aficionado, the satellite program will start in the middle of the canon with As You Like It, in order to allow for die-hard Shakespeare fans to attend twice a month in different locations and read the complete works in half the time! The first play in Rutherford County will be Saturday, July 21st at the Linebaugh Public Library at 12pm.

HOW IT WORKS:
We meet at 11:50am. There will be 16 chairs in a circle and whoever wants to read out loud can choose one of the 16. We read “round-robin” style, with each reader in the circle getting the next speech. No previous acting experience required. There will be additional seating available for anyone who wants to read along silently. The reading starts at 12:00 pm. We will take a 15 minute break in the middle of each play. Some copies of the play will be available, but please bring your own if possible.

DETAILS:

  • 1st Saturday of every month (unless otherwise noted), beginning July 7, 2018
  • 12 noon (meeting at 11:50)
  • FREE and open to all readers – no acting experience necessary!
  • The Nashville Public Library 615 Church Street, Nashville 37219
