Rutherford County Schools (RCS) is recognized as one of Tennessee’s top-performing school districts, consistently exceeding state and national standards in multiple areas. As one of the fastest-growing districts in the state, RCS currently ranks as the fourth largest, following Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville.

Since the 2002-2003 school year, enrollment has surged by more than 20,000 students, with the district now serving over 52,000 students. Even amid this rapid growth, RCS has remained committed to academic excellence, thoughtful strategic planning, and comprehensive safety initiatives, setting a high standard for public education in Middle Tennessee.

Inclement Weather Communication for Rutherford County Schools

To keep families informed during inclement weather, Rutherford County Schools uses multiple communication channels to announce school closings or delays. Notifications are shared through the district’s official website, social media accounts, and sent directly to parents via phone call and email. Local media outlets also receive updates to help spread the word.

The district works to make decisions as early as possible, ideally the night before when a reliable forecast is available. If an early morning decision is necessary, phone calls to parents will begin no earlier than 5am.

When schools operate on a two-hour delay, the first bell time for each school is pushed back by exactly two hours. For example, if your child’s school typically starts at 7:30 a.m., it will begin at 9:30 a.m. on delayed start days. Bus pickup times adjust accordingly.

Buses will run on delayed days unless parents are notified otherwise. The same process applies if the school day is shortened due to weather conditions.
