Nashville Didn’t Wait to Be Handed a Season Opener. It Built One — and It Starts With a Concert.
Neutral-site college football openers are usually a favor granted to a city by somebody else. A conference picks you. A network picks you. You wait your turn. Nashville, with characteristic impatience, went and assembled one itself — and then, because this is Nashville, put a concert in front of it.
The inaugural Music City Kickoff lands this Labor Day weekend, and it is bigger than the football game at the middle of it.
Saturday: the concert
It opens Saturday, Sept. 5 at Ascend Amphitheater on the riverfront with Lee Brice, Gabby Barrett and Payton Smith. The venue lists a 7:30 p.m. start; our own calendar carries a 7 p.m. listing, so check the time printed on your ticket rather than trusting either of us. Ascend holds 6,800 — 2,300 in fixed seats and 4,500 on the lawn — which for a bill this size makes it the intimate end of a Nashville country show.

Sunday, daytime: downtown
Sunday moves the weekend indoors and onto Broadway. Bridgestone Arena hosts the second annual Sprouts Farmers Market Broadway Block Party alongside a women's college volleyball doubleheader — which is a genuinely unusual thing to put in an NHL arena on a September afternoon, and a reminder that the organizers are treating this as a sports festival rather than a single game with a tailgate attached.
Sunday night: the game
Then it crosses the river. Louisville and Ole Miss open their 2026 seasons at Nissan Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, carried nationally on ABC. An SEC program against an ACC program, in prime time, on the last night of a holiday weekend, in a building that holds 69,143.

Why it is here at all
The event was built by the Nashville Sports Council in partnership with ESPN Events — the same machinery that has spent two decades quietly turning this city into a neutral-site destination. Nashville long ago proved it can host a bowl game and fill a stadium in December. What it has not had, until now, is a season opener with its own name on it, which is a different and more valuable thing: openers are the only college football games in America that nothing else is competing with.
There is also a clock running in the background. The new Nissan Stadium going up next door is scheduled to open in the summer of 2027 with 60,000 seats, which makes this one of the last marquee neutral-site nights in the current building.
If you are going
Three venues, two days, and a Sunday night football crowd on a holiday weekend: the traffic is the story you will actually experience. The stadium is at 1 Titans Way, across the pedestrian bridge from downtown, and walking that bridge will beat driving it. Ascend is on First Street at Demonbreun on the west bank — so Saturday's parking problem and Sunday's are on opposite sides of the Cumberland.
