Hummingbird Banding at Bells Bend Outdoor Center

Most kids know hummingbirds are small. Almost nobody has seen how impossibly tiny the leg bands are that go on them. That is the whole appeal of Saturday morning at Bells Bend Outdoor Center.

A licensed bander works through the process while you watch from a few feet away, explaining what the data is for and why these birds are worth tracking as they head south. It is calm, it is genuinely close-up, and it holds the attention of kids who normally have no patience for birdwatching.
