Nashville’s Family Fall 2026: The Short List Worth Planning Around
Nashville's October is crowded, and much of the best family programming is free and easy to miss: a month of library puppet shows, a dinosaur weekend at a nature center, archaeology at the Parthenon. The big ticketed anchors, like Boo at the Zoo and the Franklin corn mazes, will find you on their own. This is the short list worth planning around.
The farm-and-garden weekends
Gentry Farm's fall season — Saturdays 9 to 5, Sundays 1 to 5 and Mondays 9 to 1, through Nov. 1, in Franklin. $13 at the gate; under 2 and 65+ free. A five-acre corn maze, wagon ride, tractor playground and pre-picked pumpkins. It's a working family farm, not a theme park, and it feels like one.
Cheekwood Harvest — Cheekwood's Harvest runs through Nov. 1 with a storybook scarecrow trail and a pumpkin village, plus after-dark Harvest NIGHTS on select evenings. Timed tickets required.
Pumpkinfest in downtown Franklin — Sat. and Sun., Oct. 24 and 25. Main Street's big fall festival runs two days for the first time this year.
Free at the library: Wishing Chair's puppet season
A Very Magical Halloween Story Time — Fri. and Sat., Oct. 2 and 3, 9 and 10, 16 and 17, at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. at the Main Library, free. Not-so-scary stories and a live magic show. Costumes encouraged. It's the perfect Halloween outing for kids under 6.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in shadow puppets — Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31 at 4:30 p.m., free. The library recommends it for ages 8 and up, which makes it a good grown-up Halloween pick for older kids.
Tennessee STEAM Festival picks
The Science of History at Belle Meade — Sat., Oct. 10. Victorian-era technology, with mansion tours through the day.
Telescope Night at Dyer Observatory — Thu., Oct. 15, 7 to 10 p.m., ticketed. The season's first open house at Vanderbilt's observatory in the Brentwood hills.
Dinosaurs in the Park at Shelby Bottoms — Thu., Oct. 15 (9 to 4) and Fri., Oct. 16 (noon to 4), free. Paleontologists bring skull casts and real fossils, and kids can bring rocks for identification.
International Archaeology Day at the Parthenon — Sat., Oct. 17, 9 a.m. to noon. Hands-on stations and a working archaeologist. Admission is free with an advance RSVP.
Outdoors and free
Hobby Horse Racing at Farm Day, Bells Bend Park — Sat., Oct. 10, free. Exactly what it sounds like, plus hands-on farm activities.
Community Square Dance at Shelby Bottoms — Fri., Oct. 9, 5 p.m., free. A live band and a caller to kick off fall break. No experience needed.
Boo at the Zoo — Nightly Oct. 16 through Nov. 1, 5 to 9 p.m. at the Nashville Zoo, ticketed. The city's biggest family Halloween run, and one to book ahead.
All of it, plus the week-by-week additions, is on the Nashville family events calendar.
