Vanderbilt’s Massive 43-Acre “Anchor Park” Development Moves Forward

Vanderbilt University is moving forward with one of its biggest development projects yet, and it could eventually reshape a 43-acre section of Nashville.

University leaders are referring to the project as “Anchor Park,” although Vanderbilt says that name has not officially been finalized.

The proposed innovation district would sit on the southwest corner of Vanderbilt’s campus, and Metro Council officially approved the zoning for the development on September 1.

The vision is similar to major innovation hubs like Stanford Research Park and MIT’s Kendall Square.

Vanderbilt plans to transform an area that’s currently made up largely of employee parking lots into a mixed-use neighborhood featuring corporate offices, research and startup space, residential units, restaurants, retail and public spaces.

Chancellor Daniel Diermeier has said Vanderbilt doesn’t want this to feel like a traditional office park. The goal is to create an entirely new neighborhood within Nashville.

There’s still a long way to go. Vanderbilt has not selected a development partner, and university leaders say the project could take a decade or longer to fully build out.
